Almost..
November 16th, 2006 by Jon Waraas
Damn it! Tookle.com made $18.50 yesterday! So close! I tweaked the ads around a little bit more today so hopefully I can get up to $20. I also emailed google to find out if I can place images next to the ads that close and asked them about the high CTR (about 40%). I uploaded another screen shot for everyone. I left a little something somethin out for everyone today.

Wow, that’s a lot of clicks. I get around 2000 impressions per day and only make, on average, $1/day. This proves it’s possible for me, with better ad positions to make $30 per day, Jon??
Well done jon, doing very well
Hell yeah its possible! Thats why im doing this to show everyone!
But what do I know? I+m just a spaceranger that got lucky! LOL
I will tell everyone exactly where i got the advertising and where else you can advertise in a few days. You guys will slap yourself when I tell you, LOL….
Congrats. About the google ads i think you gotta ad a line to break up the ads and the images. Altho the images with the break line should still up the CTR a lot.
I haven’t checked your blog in a while, but glad I checked back. Seems to be going well! Good work. However, I’m not sure if you’re right about increasing your revenue by reducing the number of ad units you’re running.
AdSense count 1 impression PER AD you run on a given page. So if you get 1 pageview, that has 3 ads running, the number of impressions shown will be 3. If you run more than one set of ads, then true your CTR will drop, on a PER AD basis. But only because your impressions increase dramatically. The CTR on a PER PAGE basis should increase, meaning you will get more overall clicks - meaning more revenue?
Example…
Say you run 2 ads on a page that is viewed 500 times. That makes for 1k ad impressions. Say 100 clicks, giving a 10% CTR.
If you only run 1 single ad, you may increase the CTR shown to say 15%, but you’ll only be running 500 impressions (1 ad, per 1 page impression), which means 75 clicks. So you’ve actually LOST 25% of your potential clicks by getting rid of the second ad.
Now, if you half your impressions by getting rid of an ad unit, you would need to double the CTR shown to get the same number of clicks as before.
I’ve always found it better to run 3 ad units. Yes your CTR will drop (as you’re collecting more ad impressions), but the number of clicks you receive will increase overall quite substantially. Unless you’re thinking along the lines of smart pricing or something?
That’s what I’ve found anyway.
I am wondering if your CTR is so high because none of your videos load. Well, at least I don’t think they load… I gave up after a few minutes of waiting.
I found this to be true on one of my sites once. Once the script stopped working, CTR skyrocketed because people are wanting to leave your site, so they click a related ad.
I doubt you’re doing this on purpose, but you might want to check into it. From what I’ve heard, google does not like it if you have ads on a broken site? But who knows really.
Chromate - I will address your comment in the next post
David - the videos didnt work because the server was down. Also maybe check your media player updates…
From many years of testing I have figured out that less ads are better. Less ads mean the CTR go up, then the CPM goes up. A perfect example is tookle.com. I haven’t touched anything but tweaking the ads
You are doing very well !! congrats on that !! keep it up
Yeah, the CPM goes up because your impressions go down (when you remove ad units). But even though your CPM and CTR go up, your total clicks will go down, and so will revenue. Example…
From a single ad…
$20 from 1k impressions = $20 CPM
After adding an extra ad…
$30 from 2k impressions = $15 CPM
… CTR and CPM go down, BUT your earnings have increased because you’re dealing with that many more impressions.
At least that’s what I’ve noticed over my sites. After adding 3 ads my income shot up by about 30% overnight.
Try it. Run 3 ads, all well blended and I’m pretty sure it’ll get Tookle over $20/day.
Chromate - You have a good point. I will talk about this in the next blog post. Sounds good?
Nice job, Jon. I see how you “tweaked” your ads (disabling the 2 images that say video on top so users then go straight to the ad links) I was going to suggest that as well but I wasn’t sure what Google would think about that since the images are so close to the ads.
Btw, are you blocking any low paying sites in your adsense filter from John Chow’s list?

pocketrockets - Yes I am, im using the list he gives out
Jon, how much more would you have made if you used YPN instead of Adsense on Tookle?
No problemo
Probably would have made double with ypn
