After going over to Nate Whitehills house and seeing his and his roommates Macs with the huge thirty something inch screens I though Macs were pretty kool. Then once I got home and looked at specs comparing to my current laptop and then looking at the price tag which is in the $2000 range for the cheapest Mac without the warranty. I thought to myself.. is it worth it?
My step dad had a mac laptop when I was in high school and I always worked on it, I though it was a pain in the ass because the thing was so small and I had to get used to how it operated. But other than those 2 things it was fine. Then last few years I had an Ipod and that thing was the biggest pile of shit, always freezing and fun stuff like that. I then bought a Zune and haven’t looked backed. That Apple experience puts my off just a tad. So I don’t have too much experience with Macs other than those 2… well and Oregon trail…
I am perfectly happy with Linux right now, and when I get home I will probably be putting Linux on this laptop which is a Toshiba Satallite with 1.86 GHz, 4 gigs of ram, 17″ screen, and 4 years of support, and I think I paid $1200 for it. My laptop is way fast and runs all the programs I need to perfectly. I enjoy Linux on my main computer so I will be going 100% with Linux being on my laptop.
But, I may want to try a Mac notebook out. So I need you guys to tell me what makes a mac sooo fucking special that make them so expensive? I would have to spend at least 2k to get a smaller 15″ screen and less memory. Is it worth it? haha
I asked a bunch of people and it seems like everyone says that they are just the “kool” thing right now and Apple did a great job branding themselves as the new “kool” thing. So whats your guys suggestions? Stick with the great Linux or follow the trend and buy a Mac like all the other rich people are age. Lets here some suggestions ![]()

i don’t know man, if it the software you want then install it on the pc! I love linux, good ideas though!
it’s a dangerous question to ask! You might start a flame war
Short answer: If you’re asking yourself “should I buy a Mac?” then don’t.
A Mac and its user interface are prettier than a PC, that’s all.
If you’ve seen a Mac and didn’t fall for it in the first place, then you’re gonna be disappointed.
Stick to Linux and keep your money for a more powerful PC laptop. Or like me, for less than the price of a Macbook, buy a nice laptop (HP’s are solid and well designed, Sony VAIO are a bit more expensive but stylish, just avoid DELL and ACER).
And add to that an ASUS EEEpc (you can bring it everywhere and you’ll have the “kool” factor).
Total cost $1200-$2000, and you get much more than a Mac.
Reason 1: Web Developer Tools out of the box.
Php, Apache
Reason 2: Parallels, VMWare.. Run OSX, Windows and Linux on the same box. Great for testing webpage compatibility.
Reason 3: Terminal: Bash.
Reason 4: Spotlight as a launcher.
Apple+Space bar opens Spotlight Search
Type the first couple letters of your program; It finds it immediately
Apple+Enter launches that program
Reason 5: Two finger scroll on the track pad.. I love it.
Reason 6: I never have to fix anything. On windows I am always having fix shit; same with linux (Unless you specifically spec out your system for linux).
Basically its like having a pretty looking windows a long with *some* of the power of linux that you are familiar with (BSD in this case is OSX framework). Also, to be a power user on MAC you really need to be comfortable with keyboard shortcuts and not a point and clicker.
Macs are over-priced 1 button mouse’d fisher price toys for those who are too scared to learn how a PC works.
I have an iRiver which I bought after a few friends told me that it is better than iPod, much like the mp3 players from Sony or Creative. Screw iPod. Too big and too expensive. And Mac? I have one old iBook but I almost never use it. PC rules. For the money I churned out to make my configuration with two amazingly bright LG 19” LCD screens I am more than satisfied. Couldn’t get that much power and screen real estate for any Apple configuration. Screw them - they may be really user-friendly and virus-free, but definitely too expensive.
I would vote on getting a mac. 30 inch cinema display and their TWO button mouse. It makes a world of difference for me; 4 gigs a ram? Can’t it only see 3? Im not sure if that issue is fixed with Windows yet but if you bought 4 gigs in a Mac you get use out of all 4 vs. just having the 4th one chilling there
Before I got into this internet marketing thing I was going to be a sysadmin. I’m an A+ Certified PC technician, Network + certified, and a Microsoft Certified Professional. Basically, I know the my way around a PC better than most people.
I changed my focus to web design, and my co-worker, who is a long time designer, recommended a Mac. I didn’t give in for a long time, but last year I finally got a Macbook Pro.
Holy shit it’s awesome. It works fantastically. No more freezes, bugs, and other bullshit. I love the OS X operating system!
I haven’t felt like throwing my computer across the room since I got this baby. It’s worth twice what I paid for it.
I had to use Windows Vista on someone else’s computer yesterday and it made me want to kill myself.
Mark: Its funny seeing someone actually Pro Windows.
Besides, any MAC power user knows that they’ve had two button mouse support since the 90s but my mother who who I bought a for MAC doesn’t need to know this and it keeps her from messing with advanced settings.
Jon: If you get a laptop; tap two fingers on the trackpad for right-click.
Trackpad:
Single click: tap once with one finger.
Double click: tap twice with one finger.
Scroll: Drag two fingers down, up, left or right.
Right click: tap once with two fingers.
You really don’t need the single button that they do provide (I don’t use it.).
MSG me on AIM (weneedsound) if you want to pick my brain, I switched about 2 years ago.
take it from a guy that all he does is spend his time fixing other peoples computer you got to get a mac it’s just freakin cool even if you never use it it’s just cool to be a blogger with a mac
The thing that persuaded me to get a mac book pro was when I went to a Microsoft convention and all the Microsoft guys were using mac book pros with vista on.
They said it was to show that vista could work on all laptops but it was obvious how much quicker everything ran. Even on laptops with similar spec, the mac book was better. If you’re happy with Linux then mabe you dont really need a mac, but if you’re asking if it’s worth the money, yes!
Think yourself lucky, over here in the UK, macs are twice as expensive as they are in the US.
The extra price is mostly the cost of the OS, and otherwise the cost of having that Apple on the back of your screen.
Dont be a cheap bastard an get a mac. Then you understand how nice it is to actualy turn a computer on an it works. could always get a nice dell with vista ………..hahhahha have fun
I would like to buy a mac. Cant afford one now. Should be getting a new laptop in the next month.
plain and simple, mac makes better use of it’s hardware.
mac running at 1.6ghz is like windows on 2.8ghz dual core.
imagine what a 2.2ghz+ mac can do!
go to the store and try your hardest to lag osx. it’s very hard to do.
