This is a guest post by Darren.
This post is for those who are in the internet marketing game and don’t know where to start. They are looking for a foundation to build upon and are confused with all those ‘get rich quick’ or ‘survey’ or ‘browse and earn’ schemes.
I have a confession to make. I was part of those people too. I didn’t know where to start. Honestly, between you and me, I had private access to over 8000 internet business ebooks, videos and audios but still didn’t know where to start! There were so many methods and so many opportunities.
So, if you’re beginner or maybe not a beginner but still struggling to start making money online, YOU’RE NOT ALONE.
Now, let me get some things clear for you. There are many ways to make money online. Going into niche markets, affiliate marketing, domain trading, website buying/sellings, JVs…those are legitimate ways for earning long-term income.
Completing surveys, going into quick rich schemes are SHORT TERM ways to make money online. They are not worth your time too.
According to my experience, there are a few steps required to start with something:
You need to have the right mindset
You need to have the right people
You need to have the right resources
It’s simple for the mindset, you need to find something you like. You need to do something you like. That’s the only way to become good at it. Period. Reason? You’ll get many obstacles on your way, so the love to achieve that thing must be big enough not to diminish your fire.
Having the right people is finding people that actually MAKE MONEY online. You can search for them on marketing forums…and it’s not easy to find them and especially to get them to mentor you or something similar.
And at the end, you need the right resource. You need a right resource to introduce you to the game and to help you stand up on your own legs.
I know one great website to get started in internet marketing. Actually, with it, you’ll get the right resource + the right people because they teach you live. It’s called the Thirty Day Challenge – a way to make your first $10 online. The challenge starts at 1st August 2008. I highly recommend it.
I don’t think this article would be worth if I don’t provide you with action steps.
So here they are:
1) Right now, MAKE IT CLEAR or start making it clear, what are you going to do in internet marketing? It’s better to do 1 thing 2000 times than 2000 things once!
2) The next thing is: GET A FOUNDATION. Jon blog is a great one to help you build a foundation as a great resource. And Jon is one of those ‘right people’ you can always ask for advice ![]()
3) Stop reading now and start doing!
4) Read 3)
So, that’s it for now folks. If you found some useful tips here, feel free to me on my email: darenet [at] gmail.com [dot] c

Excellent post. I think the confusion today is due to a large number of factors, the greatest of which is that Internet Marketing, as a whole, has taken on so many different meanings, and roles, to the point where it has become extremely overwhelming to anyone just looking to get started.
With so many ‘gurus’ screaming at you to “do this, do that, spend your money with me…no, spend it over here. Wait, spend it here, and then spend it there also,” it shouldn’t be any wonder that someone new to the game doesn’t know which direction to go. Simply put, newcomers want to make money, but usually end up spending more than they ever make simply due to the overwhelming amount of information available, and the overwhelming number of gurus who all have something different to say.
If you don’t know where to start from, here is my advice
read for a while John Chow
then switch to Jon Waraas and Blue Hat SEO
The link is on the right side.
Kelly, agreed. I think there is so much confusion in today’s world for beginners. Some are begging for a good way to start with internet business. I started with the Thirty Day Challenge site which I mentioned on my post although I had access to 8000 internet marketing resources (well this is a little black hat I shouldn’t be mentioning this lol).
Newbies also should realize there is no MAGIC PILL to making money online although the gurus say there is…but it’s all a hype.
I agree and disagree with this - you aren’t going to get far by just doing - you will need the basics first - read for a week to a year (depending on your literacy level) then practice, try some stuff - if its evil then be ready to get caught then next time work around that pitfall.
It’s all in specialisation, trying but not being a fool about it.
The key to online business is to market your website like a corporate business. The internet market does not see your age! Your customer only sees what you present on your website.
