Last Saturday my gmail account got hacked (or my password wasn’t working properly). I recognized it within 2 hours and had my password reset which made it so the hacker couldn’t keep using my gmail account. I’m not sure 100% what happen because no emails were sent from my account during that time period, I’m hoping it was just a problem with Gmail. But since that happen it got me thinking about how secure my gmail account really is. What if one day Gmail deleted my account for some random reason or someone hacked my account again and everything got lost? I would loose a TON of valuable emails and other shit that would hurt me and my business.
Google Apps (Gmail Hosted)
So I decided to try out Google Apps instead of relying on gmail.com. This way I can use my own domain for my email such as jon@domain.com, instead of using jon@gmail.com. Gmail hosted works pretty much like gmail.com, the interface is just like gmail.com. You also get the important apps such as Google Calender and Google Docs. You are also safer using gmail hosted because if they ever delete your account you will only loose that account, but you still have your own email address (jon@domain.com) you can still use with Outlook or whatever you like. You will also have your emails backed up because of the Google pop3 feature. This way it wont set you back too bad.
Some more benefits of using Google Apps is being able to create multiple accounts for your employees. So for me I would set up info@developerhut.com, support@developerhut.com, etc and it will all be managed under 1 account. You can also set up your own personalize Google Homepage with your own logo and colors. I used to have Google Homepage for my old jonwaraas@gmail.com account, but now since using my new email jon (@) developerhut.com I turned off Google Homepage. I am trying to get rid of everything that distracts me during working time, and the 10 plus RSS feeds on my old Google Homepage was pretty distracting. On the same note I also deleted my myspace account, that thing was very distracting. Since then I have got a ton of work done, and i am pondering weather to delete my worthless facebook account aswell. I suggest you do the same if your serous about making realz cash moniez.
