Its Environmentally Day Or Something

I never got the memo, but I guess other people did. Such as John Chow, John Cow, SEOmoz, and the guy with the asain chicks. So I guess that means I have to write something to save the world.

Ok now lets be serious. We don’t have to like or become hippies to help the world out, and its not that hard to help out a little. I even try! Like I had said before, I set up a compose bin outside my house, I recycle cans, and I plant a shitload of tree’s. Its not that much but its a start ehh. So with that said, here are 3 very easy things you can do to become a hippie in training:

1. Make a compose bin. Its not that hard at all. Just make a wood box out of plywood and presure treated studs. Then put a tarp in the middle so the shit don’t touch the wood (wood rots if you didn’t know). And then put your grass clippings, left over food, paper products, or anything else that breaks down in there. Than every once in a while go out there and mix it up like a milk shake. Then after a long ass time you will have some hippie dirt, use it wisely. :)

2. Recycle. Its the easiest thing ever! Instead of throwing your beer cans away, just throw them in a separate bag and save them. Once you get enough take them to the local metal place thingy and make some mula off of them. You wont make much, I have about 10 bags full out in my garage (I drink a lot of beer and my roommate drinks a lot of mt dew) and those 10 bags will probably make me 3$ haha. But at least it isn’t going to our overfilled land dumps.

3. Plant some shit. Mostly tree’s. They smell so good and do wonders for our air. They aren’t that much money either, you can pick some baby trees up for like 15$ each, just get like 15 of those and plant them along your fence in your backyard. It helps the air and they look pretty.

Here is some other stuff you can do to help:
- Drive a motorcycle
- Turn your computer off when you are NOT using it
- Turn your heat down
- recycle paper and plastics
- take shorter showers
- never drink bottled water
- and give a bum 1$ ever time u see one (if you need help convincing yourself to give the bum some money)

Great ideas. We don’t think often about being energy conscious and conserving the environment.

PS: I think you meant turn your computer off when you’re NOT using it :).

Nice post jon,

One of your things to do to help would be very difficult to do, “Turn your computer off WHEN YOU ARE USING IT”.

Joking as side, this is our world and if everyone just at lease does one of these things it would help.

I heard recycling doesnt really help that much. Someone told me that only 15% of the metal and shit sent there are actually able to be reused.

I just looked around a little and couldnt find anything about it. I guess its better than nothing. Plus you get $3 bucks.

haha yeah its better to turn it off when you arnt using it. Ill fix that.

Its not that only 15% of the metal gets recycled, its the fact that you are helping out. Don’t make excuses to not help out, make excuses to help out. :) plus u can get yourself a big mac with the money :D

The 15% bit is probably true, it only takes a small amount of contamination to make a whole batch of recyclables unrecyclable. That’s why it’s always a good idea to rinse your crap out before sending it off to be recycled (don’t waste water, though).

Also, never ever use your beer bottle as an ash tray!

“Also, never ever use your beer bottle as an ash tray!”

Is there a story behind this?

Today I took a 20 minute shower, threw a phone book in the garbage, I leave 2 computers on 24/7 and drive a gas guzzling SUV. I guess I got some fucking work to do with this environmental crap.

And thats sadly…. a true story

Jay,

Haha. Well just start small, like recycle your cans and start turning your computers off when your not using them. I also drive a big ford truck and take long showers, im no hippie. Just try and work on the small stuff :)

Here in the UK we recycle plastics, metal and paper. They come to the doorstep and collect it every 2 weeks.

Seeing as how I crashed on my bike yesterday, Id recommend the roadster or a prius than a motorcycle

I should start recycling my paper and plastics too. My city dosent pick them up, I have to drop them off at a green dumpster thingy a few blocks away, so we will see how long that lasts.

King - how did you crash? I have a harley and love it, way better that driving a car :D

yea, if I had to drive somewhere to drop it off I’d probably never do it, too much other crap going on I’d never remember to go drop it off.

Jon: Apparently it’s the best way to fuck up a batch of recyclables according to my uber-hippy housemate. I use to do it every now and then out of convenience but I’ve since been conditioned to use a regular ashtray.

Baby steps, baby steps.
