Jon’s On Linux
July 2nd, 2007 by Jon Waraas

After getting spyware on my computer from all the porn I download my roommate cody suggested installing Linux. Linux Ubuntu runs just like windows, the only time you have to enter code is when you have to install shit. I have had it running on this computer for about a week now, so far so good. They have all the same programs that I used in Windows, they are just named different. So Adobe Photoshop is now Gimp. Itunes is Rhythmbox Music Player. All my IM programs are now Gaim. And I use gFTP for my FTP program.

It does take some getting used to, but It’s so much like Windows that it wont take ya that long to get used to it. The benefits of using Linux is that it dosn’t get viruses or spyware. Its also faster and runs better when I’m running a lot of programs at once. Plus its free.

Try it out, if you have any questions post a comment or shoot me off an email :)

If it’s so much like Windows, why not just use Windows?

Congrats, I’d love to make the move but Ubuntu wouldn’t install on my laptop(s).

Gimp won’t cut it. Neither will most of the replacement open source programs. But, you could just use an Apple. :) I use a PC but porn only comes from legit sources haha.

I made the switch 3 months ago and the only thing I boot into windows for is buying music through iTunes.

I burned an Ubuntu ISO CD but didn’t try booting to it yet. From what I hear setting up a network on Linux is a pain, so I guess that is what is holding me back.

Porn on Linux should not be looking worse then on Windows :) So, go for Linux! Nowadays, it’s very easy to install, much easier then Windows, I would say

I was thinking to get Linux many times but I have always some external device which is not supported so I have to stick with windows. Or I might be lazy find out if it will work somehow.

Michael – As soon as the new power supply gets here for the music server, we will see how hard it is to network a linux lol. I hope its not a pain..

Scot – I dont need a mac for what i do. I dont do much design at all. So a free OS is great :)

Ubuntu is definately the most user-friendly penguin distro. I just wish Canonical would name one of their releases, “Teabagged Turtle”. That would really make my day.

I’m seriously considering Linux… Vista looks like a major resource hog.

I have two PCs – one for making sites and kinda general purpose which runs XP and the other which is for installing and testing scripts etc which is Ubuntu. The Ubuntu box I got for $30 on eBay and it stays on all the time – runs as a server and sits in my basement. I access it via TightVNC and have the /var/www directory setup as a share so if I am writing a PHP script I can work from that dir on my XP machine and easily run the script in my browser. XP and Ubuntu each have advantages. The one thing I am not interested in however is Vista.

The GIMP not only will cut it, it does cut it. Unless you are doing crazy amounts of CIA level photo manipulation, GIMP is more than enough. Ubuntu Rocks. I have a few macs, a couple PC’s and a server on Ubuntu.. Free software is the SHIT
