For the last two months I have been researching everything about SEO. You have probably seen me in forums asking a shit load of questions about everything SEO. I love tricking the search engines, its a game for me to find new ways to trick the search engines into ranking my sites. The funnest part is using your head to think of ways to trick the SERPS. I guarantee that the real blackhatters wont tell you how they really get their rankings. Trust me, I have tried. So you have to think up your own ways to get that ranking..
One of my four projects going on right now are scraper sites. A scraper site is a website that scraped its content from other websites. The scraper CMS I use gets its content from wiki and the top 3 searches for the keyword being scraped. The program I use is YACG, which works very well. Its opensource and works great. However, the copy I use is heavily modified. I try and make the scrapped content as unique as I can. I also use an new template for every 10 scraper sites I have.
I really didn’t think that scraper sites worked, nor made money. Oh but they do! After 5 days of having 20 scraper sites launched and doing daily pings for them all I have been making some cash monies. Im up to about $2.50 a day. The crazy thing is that none of these sites have any backlinks, but some are ranking on page #1 on google for some really really good keywords. You will be amazed of the keywords if I showed you!
Now the guys that make a living off scraper sites make thousands and use automated server side programs to ping and get some backlinks for there scraper sites before they get banned by google. Which is usually 2 months. But I want to see if I can get my scraper sites in the SERPS for a long time, and keep building backlinks for them, so thats the next phase of my testing. Right now I have 20 sites and only about 5 are indexed, the rest should be soon. My goal is to get at least 50 backlinks too all of them using BH methods. Then maybe I can start making some decent cash from this.
Does anyone else do scraper sites? Whats your outcome?

I write scrapers to do research and make like easier for me. For example I have a cool scraper that diggs (no not on DIGG) high ranking sites to post comments on. As for making sites with scraped content, I don’t do that.

Good post, I’ll have to get around to looking at that YACG thing.. I just make scraping sites with Wordpress, then make massive link chains.
The secret of making money is setting it up to auto-socially bookmark every single post. I set up a funny pics scraper 3 weeks ago and it’s got over 1,000 incoming links now from social bookmarking sites.
I have 20 of these! They make me some money, but not much.
I think I have to ping them, never done that.. Build some links though…
The pitfall with scraped websites is that at first you make 10 websites, all that brings you $1 a day. Then you think, hey if I can make 1000 wbsites, I’ll get $100 a day!!!
But it just doesn’t work like that.
The real trick is: create, measure and analyze what’s working, and do it more.
I’ve been making scraper sites for a awhile now and noticed a lot of different outcomes even if each site is promoted the same way. Some sites will last 2 months.. and then come back 2 months later and last for another 6 months. Other’s will never make any money at all. I use the machine gun approach which works well so far.

PS. Are you pinging your sites daily, and adding content daily? Or just pinging every site daily?

I’ve aldready added content to them all. I just ping other sites daily. I also have them in squirt. And a few other methods..
I think the machinegun approach is put as many bullets as possible downrange or make as many as you can.
The idea of figuring what works by create, measure, and anaylze is nice, but it’s tough to get your head around all of the metrics. I have done almosy exactly the same type of site over and over with totally differing results. It’s tough to crack. I ping a site once in the beginning, and then go to post on a blog farm and ping those blogs. After they are indexed I go on to a different linking strategy. I make a few bucks for most sites over the life of them. I am trying to get more tools to automate linking so I can do more sites. The potential is there, but requires automation. IMHO

Auto generated sites have been on the decline with Adsense’s recent banning.
How are you monetizing them, and the comment about 10 sites $10 and 100 sites making $100 is completely true, it dosent work like that. jon if you have msn, let me know.

Well.. this guy got cought. But it’s an easy way to gain a bunch of backlinks - the black way. Just google for exploits in wordpress, joomla and e107. The last is often installed on .edu’s - don’t know why.
My friend makes alot of $ from blackhat sites, he of course wont share any secrets but ive been trying to get it out of him!

The outcome remains to be seen. But hopefully you’ll get banned after the dmca reports go in about you and your sites.

I am not even gonna try to find if the scraper comes from an api or not anymore, I will just launch a dmca that I have automated in future. And let loads of other webmasters use the automated dmca to defend content.
