Look at the impressions - your traffic bombed :) I think it's a bit early days to do this kind of quality over quantity experiment with ads. Because the traffic fluctuates so much that it's hard to draw any conclusion. What I will say is I guess a lot of it has to do with the type of niche the site is in. If you have a large number of advertisers then adding more ad units will probably be better, because you have enough quality inventory to fill the space. If it's in a niche such as Tookle, where there is naturally a shortage of quality ads then adding more ad units might not work so well.
