Turnkey Sites For Poor People
June 19th, 2006 by Jonathan Waraas

OK, I’m going to tell everyone how to make a little extra money. This tatic was used when I was poor and needed money. I’m too busy to do it these days. I had fun doing this, you should too.

OK, first off. I’m going to tell you what a “Turnkey” website is. A Turnkey website is a site that is not established yet, has no content ( or no unique content ), and no traffic. Turnkey websites are usually sold for cheap mula. So…. i’m going to tell you how to make turnkey websites in a kinda mass production way ;)

Back in the day, like 1 year ago, them entertainment sites where the myspace sites of today. They where popular. I wanted extra money so I would set up a backend, a simple template system, and I would add tons of content to the backend. I would then make a unique frontend for each “Entertainment Turnkey Website” that I sold. It was that simple.

So in this post, this is what I am going to go over with you.

1. The CMS (Content Management System), and the backend
2. Adding content
3. The template system and how to add a unique design

Now with this turnkey site that we are gonna make, you can choose and type of site you want, the only rule is, is that it has to be a content site, duh, haha. So you can make a entertainment site, gaming website, photoshop tutorial website, article website (about skateboarding, blogs, bumper stickers, blue pens, or even coke cans, I don’t care, just make sure you write/make the content yourself).

Now the first part of this turnkey site is deciding on your website, lets make a photoshop tutorial website. Now go to godaddy.com or your favorite domain buying website and pick out a domain that has at least one keyword in the domain name phrase (the more keywords the better). Keep the domain name short and easy to remember. So photoshoptutorialsforfree.com isn’t very good. But something like photoshoptuts.com is good.

Now after setting up your domain, go to cutephp.com and download the latest version of there CMS. Then upload it to your server, and set it up. If you don’t know how to install a script by now, then you should be worried about making money right now ;) haha I’m just joking. (send hate mail to bush@whitehouse.gov ).

After setting up the CMS on your already set up domain. Then comes the hard part. Sit down and make your content. In this case, make like 10 photoshop tutorials. It might take you some time. But its only a 1 time deal. Cas you are going to sell your whole turnkey site multiple times. Are you following? Good….

Now go into your Cute News CMS and set up your template system how you want it. And then add all your content into the CMS. I’m going to let you be creative with the CMS, there are so many ways to display news, add news, etc.

Now, at this point, you should have the domain, CMS and content done. If your a designer/coder(ME!), the hard work is done!

Go into your server and make a directory called “template”. This is where you will be putting your header.php and footer.php pages.

Now go into photoshop, make a decent looking design. Spend some time on it. Then, once your done with the design. Code the bastard. Whether its html, css, xml, I dont care. So right now you should be sitting with a coded template. Yay! Now the hard part…

We are going to make the header.php and the footer.php files. On your template, find on the template where the content will be. Now this gonna be hard to put into words. haha….

Now from where the content will be placed, highlight EVRYTHING to the top. Use the picture below for an example.

Now, copy that ( Ctrl + C ). Now open notepad. Paste the html into notepad. Save that file as “header.php”.

Now go back to your template. Unhighlight the header part.

Now do the same thing as the header. Just high light everything below where your content will be. Use the picture below as an example.

Now copy the html into notepad. Save it as “footer.php”

Yay! Now your almost done! Upload those 2 files into your domain.com/template directory.

Now, make your pages in a simple html form, but save them as php. Use tables for your content. Its easier to control with a CMS :)

Now, for your pages…

Its simple! To make the index page (homepage), simple make a page, add text, images, etc. Then save it as “index.php”. But, to include the footer and header. You have to use a php include. The way you do that is:

So now your done with the design! You should have a fully working site right now! Congratulations!

Now, the reason we set it up with a template set up, is because it will be way easy to add a different design. All you would have to do is make another design, then code it, then separate the template in a header and footer format. That’s all! You wouldn’t have to full around with any of the pages ;)

What I did with these turnkey sites is make about one a week. Then sell it on sitepoint ( http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=56 ) I sold each site for about $200 each, since the site has a unique design. But if your a trick little entrepreneur like me, you should get some links exchanges going, get some traffic going, put some ads up, and then sell it for more after a month or so. Then the site wouldn’t be turnkey, but you could get more money out of it that way.

Now I hope my instructions helped you. If you have any questions, then leave a comment, I will be happy to help you. And spread the word about my blog please :) Thanks

Also, here is a turnkey entertainment site I have made – www.funnyloser.com

And how is this considered a business or Entrepreneurial, at all? To me, it’s just junk.

You have great skills and talents… why not use them more productively in a more credible way?
